Entrepreneurship is often introduced through ideas, opportunities, and the ambition to start a business. But for a business to remain sustainable, future entrepreneurs also need to understand how decisions affect money.

This was the focus of the Entrepreneurial Mindsetting and Business Expense Savings Training Game conducted by Royal Sea Bees Construction (RSBC) in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Kalinga at Golden Fields Hotel.

The activity gave RSBC students an introduction to entrepreneurship while building their awareness of business expenses, financial decisions, and the practical considerations involved in establishing a business.

Building an Entrepreneurial Mindset

During the morning session, Ms. Glecy Grace M. Duguiawe, NC TIDS of DTI Kalinga, discussed the fundamentals of entrepreneurship.

The session highlighted the importance of developing an entrepreneurial mindset, recognizing business opportunities, and building the skills and attitudes needed to start and manage a business.

For students who may eventually pursue entrepreneurship, this provides an early look at the thinking involved in moving from an idea to an actual business.

An entrepreneurial mindset is not only about identifying opportunities. It also involves understanding the decisions, responsibilities, and challenges that come with turning those opportunities into sustainable ventures.

Understanding the First Steps of Starting a Business

The training also introduced students to one of the practical requirements of establishing a business: business name registration.

Ms. Kimberlee G. Villena, TIDA of DTI Kalinga, provided guidance on the Business Name Registration Process, including the necessary steps and requirements.

The discussion gave participants a better understanding of the legal and administrative considerations involved in establishing a business.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, these processes form part of the transition from simply having a business idea to formally setting up an enterprise.

Learning Business Expenses Through a Game

The afternoon session shifted from discussion to hands-on learning through the Business Expense Savings Training (BEST) Game.

The interactive activity allowed students to apply what they had learned while exploring budgeting, business expense management, and ways of identifying potential savings.

Rather than treating financial management as a purely theoretical topic, the activity placed students in situations where they had to consider how business decisions affect expenses.

This kind of exercise can help make an important entrepreneurial lesson more tangible: earning revenue is only one part of running a business. Managing costs and making informed financial decisions also matter to sustainability.

Preparing Students for Future Opportunities

The training connected three areas that are important for aspiring entrepreneurs: mindset, business knowledge, and financial discipline.

Students were introduced to how entrepreneurs identify opportunities, what is involved in formally establishing a business, and how financial decisions can influence business operations.

For entrepreneurship programs, these practical foundations can serve as an early step toward helping young people evaluate business ideas more realistically.

The activity also reflects the role of entrepreneurship education in preparing students not only to think about starting businesses, but to understand some of the responsibilities involved in operating one.

Building an Entrepreneurial Pipeline in Kalinga

Capacity-building activities such as this create opportunities to introduce entrepreneurship before students enter the business environment.

For Kalinga and the wider Cordillera region, developing this mindset among students can contribute to a broader pipeline of future entrepreneurs who are more familiar with opportunity recognition, business processes, and financial management.

The collaboration between RSBC and DTI Kalinga demonstrates how entrepreneurship education can combine classroom-style learning with practical activities that allow participants to apply what they learn.

The next step for aspiring entrepreneurs is turning that knowledge into action: identifying a real problem or opportunity, developing a business idea, testing its viability, and learning how to manage the resources required to build it.
